There are forgotten pieces of history that must have shaped what the United States of America is today. The people who kept George Washington alive when he was little and how they did it have been forgotten by most. Some of the less obvious inspirations John Locke had and what caused them have been lost. Even some of his meaning is lost in his writing. These things helped to make America and its government the way they are today.
Locke’s influence on Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence All individuals are created equal. This is one of the many ideas the United States is built on. This concept existed long before the Declaration of Independence was written. This idea was introduced by John Locke who was an Enlightenment thinker. The declaration of Independence is where Americans declared their rights.

He was obviously a huge influence on Thomas Jefferson when writing the Declaration of Independence. In fact, the next line says that “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government” (Declaration). This was also an important idea that made up Locke’s philosophy on government. Locke stated that any form of government which started to not function for the benefit of the people was a tyranny. It is the people’s “right to resume their original liberty, and, by the establishment of a new legislative, (such as they shall think fit) provide for their own safety and security” (Locke).
• Thomas used Aristotle’s view of natural law to justify the authority of the Roman Catholic Church in political as well as religious matters. For the purpose of explaining the fundamental reasons of law he used Aristotle’s philosophy and added the use of an eternal ruler. Judging from what I have read and seen off the videos shown to us for each philosopher, I believe that the biggest influence on the U.S constitution would have to be John Locke. He focused on the issues that to this day we are still concerned over which are; who should rule over us, how we should educate our children and what to do with those that have different religions from us. As mentioned, Locke had argued against Thomas Hobbes social contract so that people can have the right to over throw the ruler if the ruler acted like a tyrant. This became a big influence on the democratic revolution because to this day as we know it we still have a say in which ruler (president and government) we want to expel from giving us orders so long as we
He had a large influence on King James I of England. In a speech to the parliament, King James I said “First, that you do not meddle with the main points of government; that is my craft” (doc 1). King James is basically telling the parliament that he is the king and it is his job to rule and they can't tell him what to do. This supports Hobbes philosophy because Hobbes said only one person should rule with very little interference. Locke had an influence on the United States Constitution.
John Locke wrote the Second Treatise of Government in 1689 following many civil wars in Europe. James Harrington was arrested for his writing five years after he wrote Oceana in 1656. Both of these men’s ideas concerning the structure and purpose of government proved to be particularly influential in creating The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. John Locke influenced the Constitution by explaining that each individual in a society is born with natural rights and we give up part of these rights to gain better protection. The Second Treatise says, “The only way whereby any one divests himself of his natural liberty, and puts on the bonds of civil society, is by agreeing with other men to join and unite into a community for their comfortable, safe, and peaceable living one amongst another, in a secure enjoyment of their properties, and a greater security against any, that are not of it” (Locke 46).
John Locke was born on August 29, 1632 in England as a child Locke attended Christ church and then the university at oxford which there he studied medicine, which would play a key role in his life. Locke became a great influential philosopher writing about topics such as political philosophy, epistemology, and education. The world now sees Locke’s writing as it has helped found modern western philosophy. Early in Locke’s medical studies he met Lord Ashley whose stature grew and as it grew so did Locke’s responsibilities. Locke assisted in Shaftsbury political business, and once Shaftsbury became chancellor, Locke became Shaftsbury secretary of presentations.
The philosopher that had the greatest impact on the U.S. Constitution would be John Locke. Many of John Locke’s philosophical views align with what has become the U.S. Constitution. His believes that align with the U.S. Constitution are: religion, natural rights, and education. The first one that I will discuss is his belief in religion. John Locke believed that everyone needs to have the right to follow any religion they wanted to.
As the seventeenth century began, there were many changes yet to come for the world that would shape what it is today. Two political thinkers helped make these changes in the aspect of political thought. Those two thinkers went by the names of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Both of these two men were incredibly smart and knew what they believed. Both of them believed in a centralized government that was chosen by the people so that the people were able to have power also.
