The "Rotten" Times of the Punk Rock Movement Tabloids tell everyone how sexist and outwardly rude he is, interviews show his counterculture, and his music started a new movement. His famous "I hate" Pink Floyd shirt and often multi-colored hair should give him away as not only part of the punk rock movement in music, but as one of the leaders who made way for the development of it. John Lydon, the lead vocalist in the Sex Pistols, was one of the biggest voices in the punk rock community even before it had its own title. John Lydon has been called "...the most honest person in music," (Gutfield) and even called himself, "'... an antichrist,'" (Flett) showing his rebellious and brutally honest personality which was a new approach to the music world and helped to define and give the punk rock movement an opinionated voice. His carefree and honest attitude insisted that people relate with Lydon and caused many people to follow his counterculture style. During an interview, he was asked about what his fans do when they ask for his autograph and he responded, "'Oh, lots of people were shaking like a leaf. That astounds me. I don't see myself as godlike at all. I'm a bit of a rogue, I'm a devil, I can see that. But I can't understand people vibrating or wetting their knickers,'” (Dunn). Lydon's approach to fame and to the movement, in general, was new to the time period and allowed him to stay honest with his fans and to stay grounded to reality throughout his journey.
