On October 3, 1974, at around 10:45 pm, Elton Hymon and Leslie Wright of the Memphis Police Department were responding to a “prowler on the inside” call. They made the scene and observed a woman in the house next to the intended home of the call. She was standing on her front porch pointing at the house. She advised that she had heard glass breaking and someone was breaking into the house next door. As Wright showed both officers on the scene on his radio to dispatch, Hymon went to the rear of the house.
At the beginning of The Outcasts of Poker Flat, the character John Oakhurst is introduced as a gambler, who has a calm tone and handsome face, with a compassionate, generous, honorable attitude, along with valuable leadership skills. Throughout the story, John Oakhurst shows qualities of being the strongest and then the weakest character. He shows his noble side when he returns money to Tom Simson, also known as “The Innocent”, after he won a gamble. Mr. Oakhurst considered it to be an unfair match due to Tom’s little experience with gambling and returned his money to Tom and told him to not gamble. However, the town of Poker Flat “a secret committee” gets rid of the improper citizens and Mr. Oakhurst was designated as one of them due to strong and lucky gambling skills.

There were many appalling prison camps during the Civil War, but the most infamous was Andersonville. A shocking 13,000 people died in this camp(Bartels). Andersonville was run from February of 1864 until April of 1865. When the North found out about what happened at Andersonville, people were outraged. They wanted justice, and so the man running the camp, Henry Wirz, was tried and hanged for war crimes(Kohn).
James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, was the one to lead English settlers to the colony. The Spanish were there originally, but 1730, when James led the settlers, the Spanish were mainly gone. James led the settlement as a refuge for the poor and debtors. He also made a multifaceted plan for settling and government called Oglethorpe Plan, which will be touched upon further in the governments slide.
Both sources provided basic details about former State Representative Raymond W. Ewell. However, I found the first source, History Makers to be undoubtedly creditable. This source included an exclusive glimpse into the life of the senator. The History Maker, website provides researchers with pertinent facts about Mr. Ewell life. Also, the information provided seem to have been solicited directly from Representative Ewell in the form of a one on one interview.

His name was a great inspiration to African Americans all over the U.S. during the movement. He was born on March 31, 1923 in a town that most of you are probably familiar with, Oakland, California.
Oliver Hill became a strong supporter of equality. Equality is the state of being the same in number, race, class, or quality. Oliver Hill grew up in Richmond, Virginia on May 1, 1907. Eric LeGrand is a former American football defensive tackle who played college football at Rutgers. He was born on September 4, 1990, Avenel, Woodbridge, NJ. He has twenty-five years of age and is paralyzed from the neck down due to an injury that occurred in football. This injury occurred in October of 2010 while attempting a tackle on the football field when he was twenty years old. I believe that his family, peers and coach would describe him as a strong and courageous person with determination that he will get back to his past self and continue to strive for his goals.
For my Quaker essay I focused on John Woolman. He was British-American Quaker leader and abolitionist whose Journal is recognized as one of the classic records of the spiritual inner life. John was born on October 19, 1720 in Rancocas, New Jersey and died on October 7, 1772, while on a trip to England John Woolman died of smallpox. He is best known for his Journal, and for his lifelong work to end slavery. Both were sources of inspiration to the emerging abolitionists of his day, and continue to inspire readers today.
Mr.Oakhurst showcased his good morals by not cheating while gambling, however, the townspeople show cased by morals because they exiled him from the town based on the unproved words of others. In the same story, Harte writes about a prostitute named Duchess that was excelled because of her promiscuous activities. Because of the societal beliefs that promiscuous activities were considered immoral and shameful, the towns people exiled Duchess. The societal oppression caused towns people to conform their beliefs and opinions to the beliefs and opinions that were accepted thus leading to depression of the individuals who did not
This is the three reasons why I believe Oakhurst is not an outcast. John Oakhurst was not an outcast because he was a gentleman. He acted kindly to the other outcasts. He also return the money back to Tom Simson because he thought it was an unfair match because Tom has very little experience at gambling. The second evidence that show he was a gentleman is when he offered to trade horses with Mother
This also informs of the internal conflict of loved ones such as Krebs mother and even returnee soldiers themselves. The use of the theme of conformity by Hemmingway paints a picture of stark differences that bring out conflicts to the central character Krebs. Readers are also informed by the difficulty of adapting to conflicting social norms such as religion and marriage that most people fit into. Krebs truly knows that he has been traumatized by the war, and even the conformity of family and religion cannot seem to understand that the best way for him to conform is taking no responsibilities and consequences such as those of
