Both John Proctor and Abigail Williams, protagonist and antagonist, paramour and mistress, hold internal fears which fire their very actions defining the plot of the Salem Witch Trials. Proctor ultimately gives in and dies for what he believed to be a good cause, and Abigail ultimately abandoning Salem and leaves all the evil she had caused to find a new life. In short, the essence of fear is an all-too-powerful strength that, when your guard is let down, will consume you and your actions, conclusively drawing a negative fate. As the popular Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters Are on Maple Street” comes to an end, creator Rod Sterling states: “For while fear may keep us vigilant, it's also fear that tears us apart.”

In the play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, Judge Danforth and Abigail Williams can be seen as the two characters most responsible for the death of fellow townsmen, John Proctor. Abigail could be seen as the cause of death of John Proctor because of her compulsive lying and her way of manipulating
In a town called salem there was a huge rumor going around. That rumor was that people were doing witchcraft. Many innocent people were being blamed for the action of doing witchcraft that had nothing to do with it. These people were being hung for doing absolutely nothing but telling the truth. In times like this their are many grudges and personal rivalries going on.
Proctor Problems Intro: In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, several unusual events unfolded in the town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. A series of prosecutions were held no matter the age, and many relationships were affected. One particular person who was effected is John Proctor. John struggles to find peace with himself throughout the play withlist pleasing his wife.
The Crucible had many times where the Character's were conflicted on what they should actually do. One instance of this is Act 4 with John Proctor. John Proctor was a man that performed adultery, which sparked this whole case of events to spark. His wife from the very beginning is very conflicted in whether she should forgive her husband for the sin he has committed. When Elizabeth is ordered to court the rage within Mr.Proctor arose and he exclaimed many things thought to be shameful by the people of Salem.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the setting is Salem, Massachusetts during the late 1600s where the town’s pious Puritan beliefs directly influence their government. A 17-year-old girl named Abigail Williams had an affair with John Proctor, a wealthy, married man. Abigail is told by John to move on but instead, Abigail starts accusing the townspeople of witchcraft, including John Proctor’s wife Elizabeth. As this hysteria begins to rise, other people such as Thomas Putnam, a rich landowner, start to also allege Salem villagers. In this play, the author illustrates the central idea that people should not allow jealousy to control their actions.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams and John Proctor are known to have had an adulterous affair with one another. Even though both John Proctor and Abigail are worthy of blame for their actions, Abigail is the most culpable of the two. In The Crucible, Abigail is the most to blame because of her “tempting” Proctor to carrying out the act more. During Act 1, Abigail is shown to keep egging on Proctor although he does not want to have the affair with her anymore.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller introduces the idea, apparent in today’s world, that sometimes people blame others to save themselves from punishment through the characters’ actions and the asides from Miller. The most prominent character that displays this theme is Abigail Williams. Several times Abigail pushes the blame on others when she senses trouble. When Parris finds the girls dancing in the forest, Abigail knows she has to do something to avoid punishment.
The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
Abigail forces the girls of Salem to dance in the woods with her to help conjure spirits and make the charm to kill Goody Proctor. Abigail threatens the girls right after Betty took fright by saying, “let either of you breathe a word or the edge of a word about the other things and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” (Miller, 144). Later on as the trials prolong Mary Warren turns on Abby and is telling the court that she lied. When Abigail then accuses Mary of witchcraft she turns back to Abby and obeys her once again.
The Relationship Between Proctor and Abigail #2 John Proctor and Abigail Williams have a very complicated relationship, that heavily influences the events throughout the play, The Crucible. Without these few events, the witch trials may have never begun. But what were these few events? For one, Abigail and Proctor had an affair. Abigail was a house maid for Elizabeth and John Proctor.

Elizabeth, a woman who is loyal and true, or manipulative and ruthless liar, Abigail. She pretends to see spirits and commands the other girls to pretend as well.
In the play, act one describes the relationship between Abigail Williams and John Proctor creating the quality of arrogance. Before the play begins, Abigail and Proctor have an affair; however, feeling guilty, Proctor decides to end the affair in order to focus on his marriage with Elizabeth. Now in a room alone with Abigail, Proctor stands over Betty, Paris’ daughter who cannot wake from her sleep. Abigail walks over to Proctor and leans over him to admire his strength. As soon as she complements him, he gives a small grin.
