The novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on the Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Each character in the story has their own character traits to portray that character. John Proctor is a hardworking farmer who has a wife (Elizabeth) and he is also a father. Reverend John Hale is a very intelligent person who is highly educated on witchcraft. Both of these characters have traits John Proctors is that he is a hard worker and Reverend John Hale is very intelligent individual.
In the story, John Proctor is a hardworking farmer. In act two as the act begins John Proctor is returning from work and Elizabeth questions him, why he was out so late. John Proctor responds, “I were planting far out to the forest edge” (Miller 47).
