Tragic hero; a person in who contains a tragic flaw in which leads to personal downfall. This blemish of someone’s personality or being can be portrayed in many ways. Examples include a weakness or error in judgement, leading to a state of suffering and/or struggle. A tragic hero must receive pity from the viewer (or reader). John Proctor is seen to embody these qualities throughout the Crucible. It is clear that John is held in high regard in his community. This is until his affair with Abigail takes a heavy toll, damaging his reputation and eventually taking his life. Towards the end of this play the audience truly is sorrowful because of John’s end, aside his sin. Similar to any other human, John Proctor has negatives deep within himself.
