A tragic hero is a character in a play or novel who is destined for a downfall, suffering, or a defeat. In the play of The Crucible John Proctor is a tragic hero. The reason for John Proctor being a tragic hero, is because he has such noble characteristics, and honorable qualities. But at the same time in the play John Proctor has a darker side to him, and it takes time for all of this to come out and show.
The lead to the downfall of John Proctor, all began with Abigail. He had an affair with her and from this action onwards things began to fall downhill. During a play such as The Crucible without a tragic hero such as John, the play would not be as dramatic and would be boring to listen to or watch. John Proctor proves in the story

He is seen as evil when he says “ I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face!”(Miller). The reason for him saying this is because he is now being accused of spotting the devil when really he never did and is being almost forced into taking the blame for something that he says never happened. The reason they think he is evil is because he is saying that he saw Danforth, and he could get in trouble and possibly killed for someone saying they saw him. Proctor is also proven to be a good character when Elizabeth says “He have his goodness now....” (Miller 240). This is all being said by Elizabeth right before proctor is getting hanged. This shows us a lot about Proctor because instead of lying and trying to get out of it he just owns up and takes the punishment and is good to his name. The biggest mistake that he made was when he cheated with Abigail. Abigail states I know how you clutched…” (Miller 177). This quote from the play exemplifies both
