With John Proctor being the good person he really is, can he save his reputation and his wife from the witchcraft trials? John Proctor died an honorable man; he put his life on the line to save his wife and friends. Proctor took a lot of pride in his name; he wanted to keep his reputation good for the sake of himself and children. He was determined to go to the court and admit to his sin of adultery with Abigail. Despite being desperate and frustrated, John Proctor soon brings himself back together by gaining his goodness, along with his honor. John Proctor was a good man who was fair and hardworking, along with being an honorable man. He decided to go forth to the court and confess his sin of adultery with Abigail to ruin her name in the high court. In order to stop Abigail, he knew he would have to ruin his own good name. Proctor also brings forth Mary Warren’s testimony that all of the other girls have been faking it the whole time. Although being desperate and frustrated, he hopes that the court will see Abigail as no longer a saint but a whore. Proctors attempts to end the trials fail, along with him being arrested for witchcraft. Although he couldn’t convince the court, he was gaining his self-respect back. Proctor felt that by admitting his lechery, he would no longer be a hypocrite. To save his own life, he was tempted to confess that he was working with the devil. He also states that he’s a bad person, hoping that this could save his life as well as his wife’s. When John is asked to sign the paper, he refuses and says “because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name?
