Tragic hero is a great or virtuous character in dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat. John Proctor I think was definitely in the category for tragic hero. He fit that definition almost perfectly. John Proctor was really destined for all three downfall, suffering, and defeat. John Proctor didn’t have many flaws he just had one really really big flaw. From the start of the story when you first find out about what John had done you could tell it was gonna cost him. You just didn't know how much it was gonna cost him. His flaw was that he had an affair with Abigail, and some people that read that might have got mad about it. That wasn't something that made people not like him though. So then Abigail said John Proctors wife was a witch. Since Abigail said Elizabeth was a witch Elizabeth got arrested. If you were John Proctor you wouldn't have just sat back, and let your wife get hung by the gallows for no reason. You would have tried to stop it. So John Proctor went to the court, but Abigail had the whole court fooled. Except for Reverend Hale. That didn't matter though the court was corrupt. So John Proctor got arrested, because he said he had an affair with Abigail to get his wife out of it. That didn't work Abigail was still good and Elizabeth was still in jail. John Proctor was supposed to be hung from the gallows. The court didn't do it right away though. John Proctor had the opportunity to live though. All John Proctor had to do to live was confess. All though John Proctor wasn't lying and didn't do anything to be hung. The only way to not get hung from the gallows in Salem was to confess and say you did it even if you didn't do anything at all.
