In the book, “The Crucible” by author Arthur Miller, there is much debate over whether or not John Proctor is a good man. John Proctor is the protagonist of the book who has made many mistakes. John Proctor is a bad person for many reasons. The definition of a good person from Gymglish is “a human being who is kind, honest, moral or virtuous,” and Proctor is not that. He committed adultery, skipped church, and only confessed only because he felt guilty. John Proctor is not a good person because he committed adultery. John confesses to adultery with Abigail (Act 3 pg. 102). John is not a good man because cheating on his wife was not moral of him. To be moral it means you do what is right and committing adultery was not right of him. Elizabeth said that when she was sick John began to turn from her with Abigail (Act 3 pg. 105). In 17 months John Proctor had only been to church 26 times (Act 2 pg. 61). In the 1600s it was a big deal to skip church. If you skipped church back then it was very frowned upon, making it very immoral to skip church. Since John skipped church so much he was not a good person. Proctor admitted to plowing on Sundays (Act 3 pg. 84). Plowing on Sundays was not allowed because according to the church no one should work on Sundays, and instead should attend church.
