John Proctor, a more lovable what you might call protagonist of the book who sticks his feet in the ground and dies for his name. The Proctor you know however may just be different from the real John Proctor. Abigail said to John, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart... I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!”(Miller, 150). A courageous character is that of which shows bravery, one who is not deterred by danger or pain. There are many characters who exhibit courage throughout The Crucible. The officials of the court attempted to stop the spreading dissent among the townspeople by getting proctor to sign his freedom for a blackened name. He refuses and says to Elizabeth that he will, “Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it” (Miller 133). In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
John agrees to confess falsely .But he refuses to accuse anyone else of being a witch. The court insists that the confession must be made public. Proctor became filled with rage and tears it up. Proctor goes to the gallows and is hanged.
In Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible” there is one character who stands out from the rest, who catches your attention throughout the story, and his name is John Proctor. A tragic hero is a member of the community that has a tragic flaw that eventually will lead straight to a tragic fail. Through his good and bad deeds, his adultery, and his stuck up pride, would Mr. John Proctor be considered a tragic hero? John Proctor is a very prominent man in this community. He helps work the fields, he takes the load of people who can’t do it, and he is just all around a town favorite.
The best character (The crucible) John proctor was the most admirable character in the play because he sacrifices himself for his for his children, also he was a good husband and because he was much known in the town he had a lot of problems and also a lot of things to do like, takes care of his children and a ranch that he has. In act 4 the author wrote “Because I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (page1232) Act4. That John mean in this seen is that he was regretful about lying, and because, of him a lot of people was hang he apprehend that lying is not good and he needed to pay for his act .

Furthermore, John has a heated argument with his wife, due to his encounter with Abigail, alone. Although, he thinks his wife will doubt him, she states on the contrary, “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John - only somewhat bewildered” (55).
Elizabeth cannot be hanged because she is pregnant and the child inside her is innocent. John finds Abigail and tells her to stop all this nonsense and to never mention Elizabeth’s name in court again. Abigail is then found with a needle into her and blames it on Elizabeth. Soon enough John gets accused of witchcraft and has to confess to it or he will hang. While he’s in jail, Abigail asks him to run away with her to Boston so that they could be together and so that he wouldn’t get hung; John refuses.
He was given the choice to either confess to being apart of witchcraft and be spared or not confess and get hanged. He is allowed to talk this over with his wife and at first they decide it would be better to confess even though they know he didn’t do anything! At this point in the play John realizes that it is not the right thing to do. He says “ How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul now give me your name.”
