The story of The Crucible written by Arthur Miller tells the events of John Proctor and the Salem witch trials. John Proctor is a man who is haunted by his guilt of adultery and doesn’t want his good name to be ruined. Throughout the events of John Proctor which have led to the moment wear he tears up his confession that would of save his life but condemned those who didn’t confess or pled guilty to witchcraft. This act is believable for the character of John Proctor as well of his sense of goodness returning. With the events that happen to John Proctor that led to this final noble act is justify with who he is as a person.
Life or Death: Did John Proctor Make the Right Decision? Countless people have learned about the lies and horrors of witches in 1692 during the Salem Witch trials. In The Crucible, a tragedy written by Arthur Miller, it displays the tragedy and wrongful convictions of the townsfolk of Salem. One notable character being John Proctor a well respected upperclassman in Salem who was willing to confess his sins, sacrificing his life for the greater good of his family and friends. There are many reasons people choose to do things in life whether or not they will turn out well in the end.
John had an affair with Abigail when Elizabeth was sick, which made Abigail crazy for him. John forces Abigail to began accusing innocent people so that she would be able to finally accuse Elizabeth. When Proctor finds himself on trial, he reveals to the court that he knows Abigail. This was a very bad decision because now the court will find it hard to believe him. Proctor tries to tell the judges that Abigail wants to replace his wife.

The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, is driven to go against her moral duty and pursue John Proctor. She will stop at nothing to see her plan through.
For example, the affair between Abigail Williams and John Proctor. Abigail used to serve under the Proctor household as a servant, but ever since the affair, Abigail has long lusted for John Proctor. She is jealous of Elizabeth Proctor for having John Proctor as a husband, and therefore hates her, especially after Elizabeth had found out about the adultery and kicked Abigail out of the house. Later during the crisis, Abigail meets with John Proctor and she talks about their affair. John Proctor constantly refuses to accept their past affair, and Abigail becomes heartbroken.
Abigail does all this for the man that she loves and had an affair with, John Proctor. If the reader begins to focus on John, his actions and what he stands for, they are easily able to recognize he portrays characteristics of the flawed nature of an individual. It is shown through the fact that he had an affair, isn’t able to forgive himself, and at the end of the book, is unable to give up something dear to him to save himself and others. When analyzing John Proctor, the first thing that stands out is that he had an affair with a 17 year-old Abigail Williams. Proctor has a wife who loves him and three children but still decides to stray from his family and fancies someone else.
John Proctor’s words towards Elizabeth signal irritation and annoyance. John Proctor, the main character of The Crucible, has an affair with a much younger girl, Abigail Williams, breaking his wife, Elizabeth’s trust in him. Her suspicion of him rises when he tells her he was in a room alone with Abigail. Elizabeth’s growing mistrust begins to aggravate John, which is revealed when he says, “I’ll not have your suspicion any more” (489). Elizabeth is doubtful after learning about John’s affair with Abigail and her lack of trust in her husband begins to anger him.

In The Crucible, the protagonist John Proctor was. In the town of Salem, in 1692, a group of young ladies by the names of Betty Williams, Abigail Williams and Tituba were found dancing in the forest naked by Reverend Parris, Abigail’s’ uncle. Reverend Parris assumed that they were participating in witchcraft. This idea of witchcraft spread through the city of Salem and the citizens began accusing each other of being witches. This started a series of court cases known as the Salem Witch Trials.
The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The action begins in the home of Reverend Parris, whose daughter Betty lies unconscious and appears very ill. Around midnight the night before, Parris had discovered Betty, his niece Abigail, and Tituba, his black slave, dancing in the woods, causing Betty to swoon. The local physician is unable to determine the cause of Betty 's illness. Mr. and Mrs. Putnam arrive and reveal that their daughter Ruth is also ill.
