John Proctor is a Tragic Hero "I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put my knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me John Proctor and whatever sin it is, you love me yet" (Miller 24). A tragic hero is a person who is well respected and honest person that has one flaw which brings them down. John Proctor is a farmer who lives in Salem and is married to Elizabeth Proctor. John is a very good, well respected man however, he does have a flaw. He had an affair with his servant, Abigail Williams. How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name" (Miller 143)! This was the part were Proctor was trying to figure out whether or not he was going to confess to witchcraft. John Proctor knows he will be hung if he doesn't confess to witchcraft. When it comes time to confess he finds out that he would have to tell the judges and Hale in public with other people around. Reputation is very important to John and he will not let this ruin his reputation. With Abigail, he did not want people to know about what had happened, however now he knows he must tell the truth. This shows that Proctor chooses what he wants to happen to him. He does not want a bad reputation about him practicing witchcraft so he tells the truth.
