The Tragedy Of John Proctor The definition of a tragic hero from Oxford Languages is the central character of a play, film, etc., depicted as a noble figure who experiences a tragic downfall. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, tells a story about the Salem Witch Trail and how it played out. In the Crucible, John Proctor fits this definition of a Tragic Hero. John Proctor is a man in his 30’s, John is married to his wife Elizabeth Proctor and has a couple of kids with her. John Proctor has a secret, though he had an affair with Abigail Williams. So in conclusion, do I believe John Proctor was a tragic hero or not? Yes, I do believe he was a tragic hero because he very much proved himself to be a tragic hero. Despite him having an affair with Abigail Williams and refusing to continue the affair, causing the start of the Salem Witch Trails. He still tried to make it right in the end and realized what he did and how it was his fault but still tried to save his friends and himself from being killed but ended up going down (dying) like the tragic hero he proved himself to be.
