Proctor’s Opposition to His Society In the book, The Crucible, Arthur Miller introduces us to John Proctor. Proctor is married and simple, yet he's argumentative toward his town for the persecution of “witches.” Proctor faces conflict throughout the town, his morals are challenged and his view on ethical implication are changing.
You can see that John Proctor is a good man, he tries to help everyone and he does not meddle in the lives of others, he is considered an upstanding member of the community. John Proctor is a hardworking middle aged farmer, husband, and father. People love and respect him although they know he is not without human failing. For example with Mary, when the Counsel take Proctor’s wife, He starts to scream at her and almost hits her. I understand that he doesn’t want to lose his wife but, he can be gentler with her or when he has an affair with their teenage servant Abigail Williams, a girl that tells lies, manipulates her friends and the entire town, and eventually sends innocent people to their deaths.
John Proctor is a pedofile but a hero. In Arthur Miller's movie, "The Crucible,” released in 1996 in the United States, the town of Salem is consumed by a mass hysteria as people are accused of witchcraft left and right. John Proctor, the star of the movie, plays a crucial role on how he could have been the character to have ended this madness. In "The Crucible,” I believe John Proctor could have ended the hysteria in Salem by avoiding the affair with Abigail Williams, being more honest, and exposing the lies. To begin with, John Proctor should’ve left Abigail Williams alone.
When people are accused of a crime they didn’t commit, it often has lasting effects on them and their loved ones. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, he explores the Salem Witch trials with characters that are accused of a crime they clearly didn’t commit, and are sent to their death. In a similar fashion, the five adolescents who were accused and found guilty of a heinous crime in New York City were ultimately found innocent after they served years and had eliminated a chance of restoring their youth. In the Central Park Five court case that occurred in New York City during the late 1980’s, the idea that a hero is someone valiant is proven by Antron Mccray. In the play, the Crucible by Arthur Miller, it displays that a hero is honest based on
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller preserving one’s reputation was important to many of the story’s characters. Three of the characters that found preserving their reputation important were John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren. John Proctor was a well respected man in Salem. The town’s people thought highly of him. When he was accused of witchery he denied it.
John Proctor is one of the main characters in Arthur Miller’s drama because of his immense struggle with his wife and himself which ultimately leads others to change the way they think of him. First of all, John Proctor is a hard working individual who loves his family, but his wife Elizabeth still has not forgave
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
SIGALIT MIGIROV BAND D CHARACTER ANALYSIS- “THE CRUCIBLE” “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, has developed and put to life many characters- including John Proctor. John Proctor is a man who always surprises us in every act, as well as shows more of a controlled, wiser personality. His motivation throughout the play can be recognized by his actions, presentation, language and dedication. Even though we are not providing much information about John’s childhood, nor his specific birthplace, but we can infer it was outside of Salem since he is isolated and constructed his own faction of his family from Salem. As stated, “…was a farmer in his middle thirties.(pg.20)”
In the film, Proctor is shown to physically throttle Mary Warren in order to force her to follow his commands. This evidently illustrates that Proctor believes that his commands are very important, and therefore thinking that he is correct in those situations. Due to the fact that he believes that he is almost always ultimately correct, it shows that Puritanical beliefs and the US’ visions of themselves are connected. Just as John Proctor credits his
After the trials were finished they immediately started hanging the list of people that were convicted of the crimes. John Proctor being one of those people, was not yet hanging but he was being held captive. Abigail visits him and tries to apologies and get him to run off with her. He turns her down and says he would rather go to hell then run off with her. Abigail apologies and tells him
The best character (The crucible) John proctor was the most admirable character in the play because he sacrifices himself for his for his children, also he was a good husband and because he was much known in the town he had a lot of problems and also a lot of things to do like, takes care of his children and a ranch that he has. In act 4 the author wrote “Because I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (page1232) Act4. That John mean in this seen is that he was regretful about lying, and because, of him a lot of people was hang he apprehend that lying is not good and he needed to pay for his act .
Miller wrote The Crucible to show cultural and political "excitement" during the communist era. John Proctor is one of Arthur most finest characters by development and personality. In the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller develops Proctor’s redemption arc with his relationships with other characters and conflicts within the town to display the idea that people who look for redemption
In Arthur Miller’s dramatic play The Crucible, John Proctor, the protagonist, symbolized truth and justice by displaying honor and pride in his name. The change in balance between those two attributes acted as a catalyst in defining moments of the play. In the beginning, Proctor equally reflected both pride and honor in separate events. However, when forced to make a decision, he chose honor over pride. Ultimately, both his honor and pride pushed him to commit the ultimate sacrifice.
Prohibition in 1920s The Prohibition era in the United States, which lasted from 1920 to 1933, saw the ban on the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the country. However, this did not stop Americans from finding ways to consume alcohol. The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, set in the Roaring Twenties, provides a vivid depiction of how people's rebellious behavior during this time period, particularly the wealthy elite who often flaunted the law and engaged in illegal activities towards the Prohibition era is reflected in the book.
