In The Crucible, A play about the series of misfortune to the town of Salem Massachusetts in 1692 that is haunted by the Devil, by Arthur Miller. When the people of Salem are accused and hanged for involvement with the Devil. There were character necessary to be accused of witchcraft and their death symbolises multiple things to the play. The three character, John Proctor, Giles Corey and Rebecca Nurse help shape the outcome of the end of the witch trial in Salem. John Proctor’s death symbolizes power to save a man's own name. He sacrifices himself to keep in name good and squander his name just to live in the town of Salem. When he was able to save himself from hanging; and yet, he changes his mind and denied the things he said to keep his name. He doesn’t want to condemned as a wizard. In the The Crucible, Elizabeth explains “ He would not answer aye or nay to his indictment; for if he denied the charge they’d hang him surely, and auction out his property.” (Miller 135). For him not to say anything, he was able to not let the court take his property and leave nothing for his kids. Because of not answering the court, he was crushed to death by stone tablet. Before, GIles died, he was smug with himself and said “More weight” (Miller 135); the last weight ultimately lead to his demise. Rebecca Nurse’s death symbolizes that the goodness of a person, doesn’t save them. Even though people know that Rebecca Nurse is the kindest and honest person in the town. Because of being accused of witchcraft, Rebecca has to confuse or no one would believe her. “Why, it is a lie, it is lie; how may I damn myself? I cannot. I cannot.” (Miller 140).
