Unicorns don’t exist, BUT apparently WITCHCRAFT does!!!! The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a well known play that tells the tale of a small town, Salem, Massachusetts, where witchcraft is frowned upon. John Proctor, an infamous man of the town, had decided to destroy his confession about witchcraft at the end of the story. The Crucible has a few main characters such as Abigail Williams, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, and Mary Warren.
Proctors final act was honor. Proctors actions were noble, he was a very honorable man. His actions really helped him and his family name. In the passage of the book ¨The Crucible” John Proctor says ¨i have given you my soul, let me keep my family name.¨ This statement is very noble.
At the point when the group of onlookers is initially acquainted with Proctor in Act I, he has a discussion with Abigail. This scene uncovers to the group of onlookers that they had been as one preceding and that Proctor has submitted infidelity with Abigail. In the following Act, Proctor discovers that his better half has been blamed for witchcraft, and Abigail is the person who has made the allegation. In some way or another, Proctor realizes that it is his blame that the allegation was made. He reprimands Abigail and promises to make it right.
In the previous semester of English 11A, we watched and studied “The Crucible”. The main character, John Proctor, makes many decisions throughout the film that majorly influence the plot and the consequences. Today, I will be discussing three decisions that I believe John Proctor made, that formed the outcome of the story. I believe his three major decisions were; having an affair with Abigail Williams, allowing his servant to bring the doll she crafted into the house, and tearing up the paper that was to be placed on the door of the chapel.
Having a good reputation in town can change in a snap of a finger with things such as the sins of someone that you would least expect it from. All the sins of someone wouldn’t matter because what matters is the bigger picture which is the confession! The worst sin in the judge's eyes is a lie because it leads those surrounding them to be harmed, which would be selfish of someone that denied it all until it overthrew him and his name didn’t matter anymore in town! In the Crucible, reputation could be seen as the driving force of the play. One could see that reputation can affect a character in an extreme manner, to the point where they make sudden drastic decisions that will protect their good name, but affect either themselves or others in a negative way. Such as how John Proctor dies for his name, or how Danforth lies and has others executed to protect himself, or lastly, how Parris lets Abigail blab because he realises his home may be the source of the problem. To begin, John Proctor, the protagonist in The Crucible, is an extremely reputable man. Proctor would do anything in his ability to protect his reputation.
Throughout the course of human history, people have always had a profound respect for their own reputation or image. No one desires to be known as a thief, liar, cheater, adulterer, or anything in between. When trying to protect a reputation, people will go to the full extent. The struggle for protecting a reputation can lead to the demise of others in the process.
In Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible” there is one character who stands out from the rest, who catches your attention throughout the story, and his name is John Proctor. A tragic hero is a member of the community that has a tragic flaw that eventually will lead straight to a tragic fail. Through his good and bad deeds, his adultery, and his stuck up pride, would Mr. John Proctor be considered a tragic hero? John Proctor is a very prominent man in this community. He helps work the fields, he takes the load of people who can’t do it, and he is just all around a town favorite.
The Crucible has many different themes. One of the major themes in “The Crucible” is preserving one’s reputation. Three Characters who show this theme are John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and Governor Danforth. John Proctor has a good reputation which he wants to keep in tact. This causes events that will get him hung at the end of the play.
He was trying to amend the relationship. Proctor realizes in court when Mary Warren accused him of being the devil that all his poorly made choice of sleeping with Abigail led him to his fate. A couple of months after he was accused and sent to jail, the judge brings in Elizabeth to try and reason with Proctor. Elizabeth told the judge that she doesn’t promise anything and to let her talk to him to see what decision they could come to.
“Leave me my name”, is one of the most important lines of the play. This statement illustrates John Proctor’s moral beliefs and ideas that have been the foundation of his life. Even though he has made horrible decisions he feels like that overall he has lived an outstanding life. In “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller, John Proctor illustrates positive aspects in his his characterzation due to the acknowledgement of his faith, understanding of social concepts, and his confession of personal sin.
Through the development of the character John Proctor from The Crucible, Arthur Miller strives to portray the extent of the effects leading to the downfall of a great man who made a single human error of adultery which evolved into a mass hysteria of his community and personal life. These unfortunate events changed him from an honest, upstanding community man to the shell of a man that no longer felt worthy in the eyes of his wife or god, and then back to an honorable, honest man who left this world with immense dignity and integrity. A tragic hero is defined as a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as “a person who must evoke a sense of pity and fear in the audience. He is considered a man of misfortune that comes to him through error of judgment.” For a tragedy such as The Crucible, a tragic hero is necessary to [introduce] pity and [evoke] the audience. The qualities of a tragic hero in The Crucible can be seen in John Proctor through his noble traits, tragic flaw, and the cause of his ultimate downfall.
Abigail does all this for the man that she loves and had an affair with, John Proctor. If the reader begins to focus on John, his actions and what he stands for, they are easily able to recognize he portrays characteristics of the flawed nature of an individual. It is shown through the fact that he had an affair, isn’t able to forgive himself, and at the end of the book, is unable to give up something dear to him to save himself and others. When analyzing John Proctor, the first thing that stands out is that he had an affair with a 17 year-old Abigail Williams. Proctor has a wife who loves him and three children but still decides to stray from his family and fancies someone else.
The Crucible was taken place in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600’s, this play was written by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller wrote one of his most important writings on the moral dilemma that went on in this time, which was neighbor and neighbor turning on each other and the jealousy and suspicion. Neighbors accused neighbors of witchcraft which did not actually exist. John Proctor who played a big role in the moral dilemma, has to decide whether to lie and confess about witchcraft in order to save his own life, or to die being true to his beliefs. John Proctor was one of the most respected men, but he was stubborn and cheated on his wife.
