The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller, in the 1950. The story setting begins in a small town called Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Two of the characters that played important roles in this story were John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor. These two characters were a married couple who lived on the outskirts of Salem, Massachusetts. John Proctor displayed himself as an honest hard working man, who had only one secret.
The events in Salem can be attributed to many people, as the town became a hysteric place, with no room for judgement or reason. The people who were at the center of the blame are fairly obvious. The lust and jealousy that filled A. Williams made her a main instigator of the salem events, along with J. Proctor, as he was the one to cheat on his wife with her, starting this whole situation. The other main instigators are the Putnams, who quickly escalated the hysteria by having their daughter testify against people of the town and pushing others into accusations.
In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", John Proctor is our passive protagonist as he tries to save his wife and others that were accused of witchcraft. Unfortunately, his attempt was in vain and his evidence had backfired. His knowledge did not stop the witch trials because of his self-respect, and the children's high reputations, and Abigail's tactful nature. John Proctor valued his self-respect because it made him confident and helped him stand up for what he believed in. The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
John Proctor is allowing his name to be muddied while still preserving his name as a husband. The town is seeing him as impure; but all he cares about is saving his wife. John Proctor saving his wife, is allowing him to look at himself in the mirror and say “I may not be the best man, but I am trying to better myself as a husband.” The concept of looking at yourself in the mirror, being able to sleep at night, or meeting St. Peter at heaven’s gate, all are the reason he destroyed his fake confession.
Since John will not confess, he is ultimately killing himself. In Act IV, on page 1357, Johns says, “..I do not think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs.” John is so ashamed and disgusted with himself, that he doesn’t want people to know about his affair with Abigail.
He cared greatly about his family and wife even though Elizabeth was often distant towards him. In the end of the play, Proctor chooses to die rather than sign his confession, ratting out his friends and ruining his good name in the town. He did this to protect the reputation of his children so they won’t have to grow up with a lying father. Lying went against Protctors’ views and that ideal is prevalent throughout the entire play. It is revealed that as soon as he had an affair with Abigail, he confessed to Elizabeth the next day because of the guilt he was carrying around.
John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.

In the beginning of the play all John Proctor cared about was his reputation. However, ultimately he sacrificed his reputation by telling the court he committed adultery. John telling the court he was guilty ruined his reputation, which made all hell break loose.

This started a series of court cases known as the Salem Witch Trials.
