John Quincy Adams, the son of John and Abigail Adams, served as the 6th president of the United States from 1825 to 1829. Born in Massachusetts on July 11, 1767, Quincy Adams was born the eldest son of John Adams, the 2nd president of the United States. In his pre-presidential years he was known as one of America’s greatest diplomats because he created what became the Monroe Doctrine. During his post presidential years he conducted a fight against slavery. Though he was full of potential, his presidential years were very difficult. As tensions were escalating between France and Britain, Quincy Adams grew to support Washington neutrality policy of 1793. President Washington grew to appreciate his support so much that he ended up appointing him the U.S. minister to Holland. During his time of Secretary of State he helped negotiate the Adams-Otis treaty, which acquired Florida for the United States. Quincy Adams also helped negotiate the Treaty of 1818, which settled the border disputed between the U.S. and Britain over the Oregon country. By this time Quincy Adams had gotten a very impressive record as Secretary of State, but one of his greatest accomplishments was the Monroe Doctrine. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, many Latin colonies of Spain rose up and declared their independence. During this time Adams created the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the United States will resist any European effort to stop independence movements in Latin
