In this example if you were a civilian in that bank you could be terrified to be shot so you would do exactly what the gunman said which in a way gives them all the power. Another example that was very obvious was when one of the gun man caught a civilian lying about were his cellphone is he took his gun and beat a man which was a way of proving to the other civilians that he has all the power. In the movie Usual Suspects the theme power is shown when the two dirty cops were doing airport pick up on a smuggler, these corrupt cops feel that because they wear the badge and hold a gun that they have power over the doing of things right and wrong they know very well that what they are doing is wrong but they continue to do it because the power is something they thrive on and they need. Another example of power is when the crippled man was getting interrogated he believed that he was a step a head of the cops.
What characters say are often contradicted in most novels. An example would be such as in Of Mice and Men when George says “he never lifted a finger against me” (pg.40) therefore showing he is harmless but it is contradicted when he hurts others unintentionally. Lennie in the beginning is petting a dead mouse which he has killed “I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead-because they was so little”(pg.10). Nearing the end of the story Lennie kills his beloved puppy “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice”(pg.85).
By revealing how Slim is looked up to by the others and how he reacts in difficult circumstances, John Steinbeck in Of Mice And Men divulges that with social norms, such as treating the mentally impaired as animals, one can have considerate ethical judgement disregarding societies thoughts. Through past experiences Slim has acquired credit for his ethical reasoning, and he has become the favored person for perception on moral decisions . It is addressed by Steinbeck that “[Slim] moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsman”(Steinbeck 33). Steinbeck is showing that Slim was seen as superior because of he proved to be wise, making his movements seem to be done with majesty. Steinbeck also claims that “There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke”(Steinbeck 33).
Correspondingly, freedom of power can over power the will of being good. Gladwell writes about one of the guards, who said that “there were times when we were pretty abusive, getting right in faces and yelling at them” one guard remembers “ It was part of the whole atmosphere of terror”. As the experiment progressed, the guard got systematically crueler and more sadistic”(Gladwell 158). The freedom of power was so influential that the guard forgot his real identity and started to act like a real guard. The power led them to
Half way through the book, the author besides pulling the reader’s attention to the story, also aimed for the question for his work. In 10th grade I came across to such a captivating work of literature by Steinbeck. After reading one of Steinbeck’s books, Of Mice and Men, I anxiously began to wonder what exactly influenced his work. Steinbeck’s work besides applying his characters to an specific time of history, in a very creative way he also displayed a realistic exposure of ordinary problems. Similar to most writers, Steinbeck also had multiple reasons for his writing.
The first interesting point brought up was about why George treats Lennie well. This was interesting because at this point in history most handicapped people were not treated very well. This was brought up by Jack. The second interesting point was about how George and Lennie 's relationship compared to a blood-related family. This was interesting because it discussed the relationship that George and Lennie had with each other.

ITC 1: By using a motif of illusions and symbolism of greed, Steinbeck conveys the central theme of The Pearl, that one can get carried away by their dreams and everyone must exercise caution when dreaming big, especially when dreaming about material things. ITC 1 Development 1: Steinbeck uses a motif of illusions and mirages to emphasize how dreams of wealth and material possessions can be tremendously deceiving. On page 43 of The Pearl, the omniscient narrator is describing the morning where Kino is walking to the local pearl buyers and is prepared for the pearl’s enormous profit to change his life. “The sun was hot yellow that morning, and it drew the moisture from the estuary and from the Gulf and hung it in shimmering scarves in the air

The Pearl by John Steinbeck is a novella about greed and sacrifice between a natural treasure and his family. The story begins peacefully, but the tranquility soon becomes threatened after the first main event in the plot occurs. The aforementioned first event occured when the scorpion bites the baby, Coyotito, in his hanging box. This feeds into the next point when they visit the doctor and he declines their visit because of their race and inability to pay for treatment. Later into the plot, Kino beats Juana and kills a man for the pearl which results in them all having to run away from the town.
Respond to Texts “The Pearl” 1) Pick a short passage from the novel that you believe strongly corresponds with a particular theme and critically analyse how Steinbeck uses literary techniques to portray this theme. The passage I have chosen from the novel is, “ But Juana 's eyes were on him and she could not wait. She put her hand on Coyotito 's covered head. "
If a student pleased her during a particular period, he could not count on special treatment in the next days class”(pg.183). The school gave her freedom because the school gave her the choice to learn whatever she wanted to and they gave her no limit. The teacher had no favorites meaning that everyone was equal and making it easier to have the people with power to standout. One may gain power only if they are given freedom. Altogether, you can only get power only if you have freedom in the
“Of mice and men” by John Steinbeck is an example of an Honest dilemma in which someone has to choose between good and bad. In this case, George chooses between shooting Lennie or letting him face justice for unintentionally killing curley's wife. George’s choice to kill Lennie was wrong, despite the purpose behind his action. All throughout our lives, we are challenged with many tough questions. Each question shows us with an ethical predicament in which we must choose between good or bad.
Influences of Steinbeck’s Literature When an author composes a piece of literature, one may discover parallels between the work and the biographical experiences of the author. The Winter of Our Discontent illustrates Steinbeck’s perception of the pessimistic, post-war atmosphere in the United States. Steinbeck incorporates real events from the time period to exemplify changes and how some individuals would react to those discrepancies. The way Steinbeck wants the readers to view and understand these non-fiction affairs in a fictional setting allows for the reader to develop opinions about each issue.
