Lord have Mercy on Your Soul “Nonetheless, many [people] still live in fear that they'll have no control over pain and suffering in the face of death” (Lynch). This exemplified John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Lennie, who has a mental disability, is mercy killed by his partner and friend, George. George took it upon himself to take Lennie’s life, and he did it out of a sense of companionship and friendship to spare him from what Curley might have forced upon Lennie. George decided to end his best friend’s life in order to prevent him from being tortured, and this is because he killed Curley’s wife.
Michael Oher faces adversity throughout the whole movie making him have to overcome it to be the best he can be. It when Michael meets Leigh Ann Touhy and her family on the sidewalk in the pouring rain that he believes like he belongs to the world and that he just just got past the first step of overcoming adversity. Lennie has no family apart from George who he annoys constantly and being disabled and slow, his capabilities are limited as he would not be able to survive on his own. The only 'Family' Lennie has is George Milton, his friend who stays by his side to make sure he is safe. This is due to George promising Lennie's aunt that he would take care of him.
Despair Among People During the Great Depression People who face great odds will hang on to hope, however, many will lose it to the cruel reality they live in. This is the story told in the novel, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck. In this novel, Lennie and George are traveling bindle stiffs who experience the losses that come with the Great Depression, and the hope of others that is dashed by the death of one person. This theme of hope and loss is shown through Curley's wife, Candy, and George.
Although Morisson’s A Mercy and Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley are very different books, they both tell the reader about American identity and what it means to be American. One of the arguments that Steinbeck makes about what it means to be an American is being politically active/informed. The United States is known for its democracy and the right to vote is something that Americans take for granted, but it is a big part of who we are as a nation. Steinbeck (as a Democrat) wrote about the fights that he would have with his Republican sisters and he observed, “…I don’t think we were the only ones. I believe this was going on all over the country in private” (Steinbeck 152).
John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men illustrates the downfall of two lonely men. who have only each other to depend upon. Many of George and Lennie’s struggles come from things they cannot control, such as Lennie’s mental illness and the fact that both men are stuck in the dead-end pursuit of rural labor in 1930’s America. However, the greatest tragedy in this story comes from the simple fact that Lennie is left alone with Curley’s wife because Curley’s wife is the true villain in Of Mice and Men; she alone causes the trouble that leads to Lennie’s death. In his novella, Steinbeck examines the different ways that men and women express their power, and while the men in his tale rely upon the power of physical strength to assert their place in society,
The people that you least expect to make a difference, could make a huge impact. Not many people stand up for themselves, so they get walked on most of the time. The book Of Mice and Men showed the importance of being courageous and sometimes having to draw the line, even if it could do harm to others. Lennie, Crooks, and George go through so much and show courageousness for standing up for themselves. Lennie may seem like a strong man with a sensitive personality, who has realized not to do physical harm to anyone.
In the novel “Travels with Charley; In Search of America” John Steinbeck attempts to discover the American character. Steinbeck did not succeed because Americans are not all the same or made of the same characteristics. Within every place he travelled to he found new people, each different from the last. Steinbeck travels through America to places such as Maine, Oregon, and the south where he discovers varying characteristics each human being holds.
Summary: ‘The Wide World of John Steinbeck’, written by Peter Lisca is broken down in three sections. The first section is the opinions of readers, critics and also John Steinbeck. In one review by F.O. Mathiessen says, “It’s a puzzler why Steinbeck should have wanted to write or publish such a book at this point of his career.” (Page 197-198) Another review was by John Steinbeck, himself, which he said in a letter to some of his agents which stated, “Mixed up book,” and also “pretty general ribbing.”

I used to believe in a naturally virtuous humanity. Now I understand that people believe what they need to believe in order to lock down that small light that is Hope. I lived the moment of truth that inspired my new state of mind when racking my head for an honest story of when my former beliefs affected me, or even just solidified my faith. I could not think of such a time. I began to remember how I came across the idea that my faith rested in humanity, and realized my faith nurtured itself inside the many different fictitious realities I visit each day.
Steinbeck probably wanted to name the story Something That Happened for many reasons. However I think he wanted to name it that because the title Something That Happens makes the story more mysterious and interesting to the readers. I think this because the title gives reader a vague explanation about the book. Another reason could be that he wanted people to know this could happen in real life. I think this could be a reason seeing as people in the past may have not understanded what was going on and he wanted to at least try to understand things that could
