During the early 1900s, there was a great deal of debate about the application of evolution in schools. Many thought that the schools should apply the teachings of the Bible about the creation of man rather than evolution. This conflict then caused a huge trial and debate on what should be taught in schools. The Scopes trial marked a time in society when the people were not accustomed to change. Many people during the early 1900s were not for change of teachings in the school system. What really set off the conflict was a teacher from Illinois named John T. Scopes. Scopes was just like any other teacher, who taught his students from a text book. Scopes was teaching his students of Darwin’s theories and the thoughts about evolution. This along with other cases sparked a debate and the men who agreed to be on the opposing sides were Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. Both men were very well known and respected. Darrow would be defending Scopes and Bryan would representing the prosecution side. The Scopes trial would be a long debate that would require an abundance of thought and preparation to defend both sides. This textbook has a section on the Scopes trial which takes the trial from a different prospective although, the facts are still included. The textbook takes the trial from the fundamentalist side, as being for the bible teachings and against evolution (Boyer, 750). The Enduring Vision has a greater defense for those of Christian belief rather than for the people who were prosecuted. It goes to state “Let parents and local communities decide what children are taught” and gives a sense of pity toward the fundamentalists (Boyer, 750). This perspective gives the reader a different interpretation of the trial than the essay
