John Tyler the “Accidental” President John Tyler was born in Virginia in 1790, he attended and then graduated from WIlliam and Mary in Williamsburg in 1807. According to, John Tyler, author Gary May states that Tyler’s mother died when Tyler was seven (May, 2008, 19). Tyler married a woman named Letitia Christian and eventually had eight children. Letitia had a stroke and was paralyzed and then later on had yet another stroke and died. Years later, Tyler married another woman named Julia Gardiner and then had seven children. He had a total of 15 children from both of his marriages. Tyler served in Virginia legislature and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for a few years. Soon after, Tyler did become president, Tyler was sworn into office when he was 51 years old. As president, Tyler kept Harrison’s cabinet in place, but, all but one resigned after Tyler vetoed bills that were designed to create a new national bank. So, Tyler was without a party but was still able to complete many achievements as chief executive. In 1841, he signed the Pre-Emption Act, which was a Western settlement that allowed a person to stake a claim on 160 acres of public land and purchase it from the government. Two years later, the Seminole War in Florida (a dispute between the U.S. and British North American colonies over boundary issues) ended with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. Two more years later, the United States was able to access ASian ports by signing the Treaty of Wanghia with CHina. On the final day of his presidency, Tyler signed a bill that made Florida the 27th state. After being president, Tyler moved to his 1,200 acre property in Virginia with his wife and his children.
