John Tyler was born on March 29th, 1790 in Charles City County, Virginia. His parents were John Tyler Sr. and Mary Armistead and had a homestead of eight children. Tyler went to college at the College of William and Mary in 1807, and then went on to study law under private tutors. After graduation Tler worked for a law firm in Richmond. Around this time Tyler’s father became governor of Virginia. Tyler took advantage of this to gain a position in the Virginia House of Delegates. After the passing of Tyler’s father, he inherited a large number of property and slaves. In 1813 Tyler married Letitia Christian and he proceeded to have eight children. Letitia Christian would become the first lady. There have been known to be 8 presidents to be slave owners while in office. The largest amount of slaves ever owned was George Washington with 317. John Tyler owned 70 slaves within his lifetime but was against slavery. He was never apologetic about the slaves he did own and Letitia was reserved about the abolitionist movement. John Tyler was known to be decent slave owner. He never abused them and refused to split their families up. John Tyler was never known to attend an auction. It was in 1845 and was incorporated into the United States of America and was officially incorporated in December 29, 1845. Tyler signed a tariff bill to protect norther manufacturers. The webster ashburton treaty ended a canadian boundary dispute. But what John Tyler is most famous for was the Log Cabin Bill.
