John Wayne Gacy was one of the most prolific serial killers of his time. He killed more than thirty-three young men. Though, ask his friends and family and they would say that he was one of the most hard working and nicest person they had ever met. Sometimes people are more than meets the eye, -John Gacy being one of them. On March 17, 1942 John Wayne Gacy Jr. was born at Edgewater Hospital in Chicago. (THE CLOWN THAT KILLED) As a child, Gacy lived an average life. He had an elder sister, Joanna, and a younger sister, Karen, that he got along with fairly well. Miller told the court that Gacy had tricked him into being tied up when he was visiting Gacy’s home. Gacy denied the charges. He told the court that Miller had willingly done those things with him to get some extra money. Four months later, Gacy was charged with hiring 18-year-old Dwight Andersson to beat up Miller. He paid him $310 to pay off his car loan and then some. When Miller was attacked by Andersson, he broke his nose and called the cops. The judge ordered that Gacy undergo psychiatric evaluation to see if he was able to stand on trial. The mental health professionals said that he was and that he was antisocial enough that any mental treatments would have no effect on him anyway. Gacy was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was a model prisoner, realizing that if he was good he would get released on parole earlier. After being imprisoned, Gacy’s wife divorced him on the grounds that he broke their marriage vows. On June 18, 1970 Gacy was released from prison and moved to Chicago. He lived with his mother for a while before buying his own house in the Norwood Park Township. He made good friends with his neighbors. He was still getting into trouble in court for messing with young boys though. On June 1, 1942 Gacy married a woman named Carole Hoff. So he started a business called Painting, Decorating, and Maintenance (PDM) Contractors, Incorporated. He would hire only young boys to work for him. Gacy would tell his friends that he hired teenage boys because it would keep the costs of work low. (Rachel Bell and Marylin Bardsley) At least one witness says that they had seen Gacy have his workers dig large holes in the ground that would always be filled by morning. (John McCormick) Gacy’s business has traveled all over at least 14 states so there is speculation that he may have killed more people while remodeling there. (John McCormick) Gacy’s homosexual desires and urges to hurt others were becoming more and more apparent to those around him. By 1975, Carole and Gacy had drifted apart. Their sex life had come to a halt and Gacy would have unpredictable and sometimes violent mood swings. Carole had started to find magazines of young men and boys in the house. When asked, Gacy acted like it was a normal thing. He even told her that he prefered boys to women. Carole, distressed, filed for divorce soon after hearing that.
