When people think great westerns they think Rio Bravo, Stage Coach, El Dorado, and True Grit; these films have many things in common, but most importantly they all star John Wayne. John Wayne is more known for his roles in the westerns as a gun slinger or a sheriff, but he had other roles such as a navy captain, a safari hunter, and once as a Davy Crockett. He also played in different genres such as action, comedy, drama, and of course westerns. John Wayne was born Marion Michael Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, on May 26,1907(History). Every Western of John Wayne, he is famous for killing notorious outlaws or for helping arrested the bad guys. Which is exactly what he is doing in one of his most famous movies, True Grit. After hired hand Tom Chaney murders poor Mattie Ross’s father, she seeks justice and hires U.S. Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn, a man of suppose it "true grit," to track down Chaney, who is in Indian territory. As the two begin their pursuit, a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf, joins the manhunt in hopes of capturing Chaney for the murder of a Texas senator and collecting a substantial reward. The trio clash on their quest of bringing to justice the same man. Wayne plays the role of U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, a mean, old, pot-bellied, drunk, one-eyed man. Wayne uses his drawl and his swagger to make Rooster a classic movie cowboy. He brings an ease and authority to the character. John Wayne acting as Rooster Cogburn, he never over shoots or reaches to be his character, but at some points it almost seems Rooster Cogburn is cartoonish.
