Clemens, Courtney Mrs. Zajac ELA Period 3 8 February 2023 Question One “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. -Saint Augustine”. In the novel, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, the reader is presented with the main character, Johnny, a fourteen-year-old silversmith apprentice to Mr. Lapham, the master smith of the Lapham house, in the time of the Revolutionary War. Throughout the book, this character is portrayed as prideful and arrogant.
Knowing is good, but knowing all is better. Based on an actual incident, Gary Paulsen's book Nightjohn showcases this life lesson. In the story young Sarny, a slave, is taught to read and write by a fellow slave, John. She knows that as a slave that reading is dangerous. But she takes that chance, because she knows wisdom is sharper than any weapon.
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn” (google.com). This quote can easily describe the character Reverend Jonathan Hale in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible is placed in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692-1693. Miller wrote The Crucible to show the similarities between McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials. Moreover, since Reverend Jonathan Hale is motivated by his will to find witchcraft, his decision to try to get the condemned to confess creates controversy by the end of the play.
Question One In the novel, Johnny Tremain, by Lois Lowry, the main character, Johnny, was a highly skilled silversmiths apprentice. He was young, handsome, and intelligent, and by proxy has a very large ego. He burned and mutilated his hand at the age of 14 however, and became crippled, as a result of his inflated pride, and lost near everything, but retained his predominant aspects. Arrogance and pride.
Firstly, Jake Barnes, a World War I veteran who as a result of a war injury is impotent, is a direct representation of an alienated character being pressured to conform to society. He served his country and hence conformed to society’s expectation and fulfilled his role as a male citizen. But now due to his injury, he can no longer conform to society’s expectations of him. Although he does not say so directly, there are numerous moments in the novel when he implies that, as a result of his injury, he has lost the ability to have sex. He will never have biological children and likely will not find romantic love.
Everyone has been a mockingbird at least once in their life. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the characters Arthur “Boo” Radley, Jeremy “Jem” Finch and Tom Robinson all represent mockingbirds in different ways. Boo represents one because he will be judged if he leaves his house. Jem is an example of one also, because he realizes as he grows up that the town he lives in is racist and judgemental. Tom is another example because the Ewells take advantage of his life to get away with their own.
As Chris follows Henry David Thoreau’s footsteps by going into the woods he starts to realize that he's not as prepared as he thought he was. Chris was obviously not an experience outdoors man from the way he acted in certain situations. One example of this is when Chris killed a moose and tried to smoke the meat which is not easy for an under experienced outdoors man like Chris. “Alaskan hunters know that the easiest way to preserve meat in the bush is to slice it into thin strips and then air-dry it on a makeshift rack”(166). This quote shows that Chris is not well equipped for the wild which lead people to think that he died unhappy because he was struggling in the woods.
John Burnside crafts Michael Gardiners’ character for him to appear pure and fragile in relation to an antagonist who’s capable of constantly tormenting an innocent. Malcolm has the skill to detect any action Michael may be planning on taking through reading his eyes and as a result strategically preventing his escape. For example, Michael expresses what occurs in Malcolm’s devious mind when he states, “He could see it in my eyes what I was going to do before I did it; he could see, at the very moment, that I was thinking of running, and his tongue flickered between his lips in soft appraisal, as if he too were working out the odds that were going through my head” (43). As a student athlete, I have learned to use failure as an opportunity to learn. The moments in which I have "failed" have only helped me grow and reflect on the mistakes that not only I have made, but also those made by others. I was forced to do this multiple times throughout my final season of high school field hockey. Even though the team had players who were devoted and had a true desire to win, the season ended as a losing record in the books. As the primary goalie and captain, this was extremely difficult to accept.
In the book Old School by Tobias Wolff there are examples of where Tobias is a not so innocent boy. He is often times a trouble-maker and very rowdy. However, there is a passage in the book the hints at otherwise. Deep down Tobias is more innocent than his antics lead on.

This is also shown in the short story Pancakes by Joan Bauer, when the main character changes and because of it becomes a better friend and more enjoyable to be around.
Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in that he doesn't do one thing wrong. All he does is provide help to the people he interacts with. That is exactly how he got in trouble. Tom Robinson was helping Mayella with some chores. He was humming a melody and when he chopped up the dresser drawers.
