Johnny Cade,Died on April,30,1960.He was 16 at the time,and he lived on the east side of Tulsa oklahoma. Johnny went to Tulsa East High school. Outside of school,he enjoyed hanging out with his friends and going to the movies with his best buds. He considered them family. Since his family did not care for him when they were alive and he was young.
The chapters 1-5 of the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, is about two gangs the greasers and the Socs, who are always causing trouble. In the greaser gang, the protagonist, Ponyboy, is always getting good grades and is the smartest in the gang. Dally is one of the members in the gang, Ponyboy 's brother, has been in jail multiple times. Sodapop is also Ponyboy’s brother. He works at a gas station.
In the beginning of the novel, The Outsiders, written by S.E Hinton, the author portrays Johnny Cade as a weak and helpless character in the book. He`s seen as a dynamic character that has gone through extremely tough times that are difficult for him to handle alone. ``He was the gangs`pet, everyones` kid brother``, if it hadn`t been for the gang Johnny would have never felt love nor affection. He always seemed to have an anxious and suspicious look in his eyes, he was a nervous wreck. He struggled in the areas of self-confidence and loving himself, that even the idea of suicide popped in his head.
Johnny shows this theme by not letting how the greasers are seen or how the greasers see him affect his actions. First of all, when Dally is harassing two girls at a movie theater. To everyone's surprise, Johnny demanded, “‘Leave her alone, Dally’... It had taken more than just nerve for him to say what he’d said to Dally-Johnny worshiped the ground Dallas walked on, and I had never heard Johnny talk back to anyone, much less his hero” (24-25). This action of Johnny speaking up to Dally surprises Ponyboy because Johnny always follows and agrees with Dally.
A clear sign of the gangs influence on Johnny was when he decided to prevent the Soc’s from drowning Ponyboy and defending himself instead of letting the Socs beat them up and have them possibly drown Ponyboy. More specifically, after finally fighting back and killing Bob, he says to Ponyboy “‘I killed him’ he said slowly. ‘I killed that boy”’(Hinton 56). Here the author is explaining how shocked Johnny was once he killed the Soc.
(52). This shows that Johnny believed that killing Bob was the only way to save Ponyboy and that he did not kill Bob out of anger and hatred. Also, Johnny risked going to jail and losing his freedom when he killed Bob in order to save Ponyboy from drowning. By risking his life and saving Ponyboy’s life, Johnny proved that when in danger, a Greaser would sacrifice himself to save another, which shows honor among the lawless. Hence, there is honor among the Greasers because risking their life for another shows great love and bravery, which are also honorable
