On the night of the murder, five drunken Socs pull up on the street and attacked Johnny and Ponyboy. One of the Socs tried drowning Ponyboy while at the same time Johnny felt threatened by another Socs named Bob which led to Johnny killing him in self defense. Johnny is justified in what he did and is not guilty because he was defending himself from the Socs. The Socs had threatened to harm Johnny and Ponyboy earlier that night and Johnny recognized Bob as someone who had attacked him before. The capital murder trial of Hollis Alvin Daniels has started at the Lubbock County Courthouse downtown. Daniels’ case is being presided over by the Honorable John “Trey” J. McClendon in the 137th district court according to the Lubbock County website. Daniels is on trial for the capital murder of Texas Tech police officer, Floyd East Jr, according to the Lubbock Police Department. Daniels was apprehended by Texas Tech PD on Oct. 9, 2017, near the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum after he fled the police department according to a Lubbock Police press release. Where he stated that he did “something illogical” and he was the one that shot their friend as the officers took him into custody according to the affidavit.

The debate of whether killing for good reasons can be allowed has always been a popular topic for decades. In the book, The Outsiders, several killings have occurred, including Johnny’s killing of the Socs who intend to drown Ponyboy and the ultimate killing of Dally by the police. After considering all the factors that eventually lead to these killings, it is undoubtable that there is never a good reason to kill, given the reasons that it will directly result in deep pain in some people and there are always ways that can solve the problems instead of killing. First of all, killing should not ever be allowed for it generates great pain on people. If an action strongly affects a massive amount of people, whatever reasons are present behind it, this kind of action should be eliminated.
Bob’s death was and wasn’t a form of justice. Bob definitely provoked the attack which lead to his death, not only by beating Johnny up in the beginning, but also by trying to drown Ponyboy. In The Outsiders Johnny rambled about how he didn’t know what to do and how scared he was especially when the Socs were drowning Ponyboy; which is why he stabbed Bob.
