This literacy profile is concerning Johnny Johnson, a fifth grade student at Anywhere Elementary in Somewhere County, Kentucky. He was a Valentine’s Day baby being born on February 14, 2002. Johnny is 10 years old.
Johnny was described as a very reserved baby by his mother. He spoke very rarely and he often used non-verbal gestures to express herself. Upon entering the first grade, his classroom teacher noticed he was not making the gains he needed in reading. Johnny was referred for special education services in reading in the first grade. However, the testing revealed he did not qualify for special education services. He was low in some areas but he was not low enough to qualify for services. It was not until the end of third grade that Johnny was identified as having a language processing disorder. Specifically, Johnny has issues with listening comprehension, making inferences, and following directions. He has been receiving speech services targeting these areas for roughly two years. His attitude score shows that he somewhat likes writing. However, with a score so close to the fiftieth percentile, it is suggested that he leans more toward not caring one way or the other regarding this area. In most of Johnny’s responses he states that he somewhat likes the writing activities in the questions, but he somewhat dislikes writing poetry for fun, keeping a diary, being an author to a book, being a newspaper writer, writing more in school, writing long stories or reports, keeping a journal for class, and having classmates read anything he writes.
