After building trust, in order to gain complete control of their victim they start the “grooming process;” by means of physical and psychological manipulation. “This process includes force, fraud, and coercion such as: beatings, burning, sexual assault, confinement, torture, emotional abuse, re-naming and creating dependencies, isolation, document confiscation, and forced sexual education and pornography.” (7) Keen examples being: victim’s fear for their family’s safety and well-being, pornographic pictures of them are taken and used as blackmail as well as, in addition to viewing pornography; sexual assault, such as gang-rapes numb the victim to sexual activity. “Pimps and traffickers use pornography to instruct and desensitize their victims.” …show more content…

These men: pimps, traffickers, johns, and even pedophiles come from all aspects of life; some even married with children. “Johns” also known as buyers or “tricks” are the men who, sadly, are keen and willing to buy women and children for sex. They are the demand. The name “Johns” is coined from the term “john-doe” since maintaining anonymity and remaining nameless is a key characteristic in the industry. These sex addicted men are ready to pay, at whatever cost, on behalf their fantasies coming true; “Johns show pornography to prostituted women to illustrate the sexual activity they want to participate in or observe.” (7b) Giving essence too the statements and opinions of known johns; one buyer stated he believed “prostitution is where men have the freedom to do anything they want in a consequence-free environment.” (8) Another explained what he did in prostitution as “renting an organ for ten minutes.” (9) “Johns” deny that these women and/or children could possibly be a victim in sex trafficking; convincing themselves it’s an equal opportunity relationship solely because she is taking money, a definitive conscious pacifier for their actions. Individuals who are advertised online are made to appear that they are working self-reliantly, when in actuality they are victims of sex trafficking. In the last century with advancements in technology it has made easily available such resources, simply with a swipe of a finger; alongside these advancements sex trafficking has migrated from traditional venues, like street corners, alleys, and bus stops to virtual domains. Nonetheless, providing an easier outlet for perpetrators and predators to remain anonymous. Often-times, victims who are sex trafficked through control of a pimp are advertised on websites such as Backpage.com, and Eros.com. In 2010, after Craigslist removed its “adult services” section, interest in Backpage grew immensely. Backpage is a well-known classified advertising website grossing roughly $22 million a year, solely from the adult advertisement section; it is said to be the number one source for online sex in the United States. On average, girls as young as eleven years old are being marketed and portrayed as adults on these websites and then bought and forced to have sex with these sick-minded men. One fourteen year old girl stated that when her abuser found out how old she was “it didn't stop him... he wanted me even more.” (10) Sex trafficking and the anonymity of the internet has created the perfect venue for pedophiles.
