Slaves back then were treated very poorly. In the story of Night John, John experienced that. He was whipped in the back and got a finger cut off. Although slaves weren't allowed to do many things, i don't think they should've been hurt for it. My first theme is freedom. Slaves had no freedom and they were limited to many things. Slaves viewed literacy as trouble because if slave owners found out that their slave can read or write, they’ll cut off a finger or whip them. The only way slaves could know how to read or write is if they ran away at a point and came back, such as John, or learned from another slave. It’s kind of like a secret no one can know.
