I could see the patient’s face contort in pain as the nurse jabbed a needle into his upper right arm. The nurse quickly pulled the needle out, muttering under his breath that the patient was too dehydrated to have good veins, and moved to swab another portion of the arm to draw blood. Though it was only my third day as a volunteer at Dallas Medical Center, the sight of healthcare professionals struggling with routine procedures had become commonplace. I had taken on the position in order to explore my interest in the biological sciences from a medical perspective. In doing so, I found that human eyes could not provide the needed clarity to help address routine patient needs. However, I knew computational models could bridge the gap between what the healthcare industry was and was not able to do. If a picture could speak a thousand words, a computer model can speak a million.
Johns Hopkins University will be able to provide me with an education that strongly complements my passion for contributing to the fields of biology and computational science. The Department of Biology at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences allows for me to attain a rigorous education within molecular and cellular biology. In particular, I want to be able to work in the Institute for Computational Medicine, to understand better how computational models can be constructed, refined, and used to diagnose and treat patients suffering from conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease to neurodevelopmental disorders.
