Joint Assistance Sponsorship Program
Joint Assistance Sponsorship is a program that enables the Sponsorship Agreement holders to partner with CIC, in the resettlement of refugees who identify in having a physical disability, special needs or any other mental disability, that could require some form of treatment in Canada. In these case many times the refugees will require more than the standard twelve months of government-funded income support, to successfully establish in Canada. These canadiens are usually matched with specific sponsorships in the initial application process. With the Joint Assistance Sponsorship program, government assistance and sponsorship will usually be offered an extension of up to 24 months. This card will only be valid for maximum of five years. Upon the refugee’s initial arrival to Canada, they will be asked to provide a viable mailing address located in Canada, to which the Permanent Resident Card will be mailed to. The refugee is able to do this by submitting their address to the CIC in two separate ways.

In the case to which a refugee is unable to provide a Canadian address, they will be given an IMM 5456, this is an Address Notification–Permanent Resident Card. This form will need to be filled to completion and submitted by fax machine to the Permanent Resident Card Processing Centre at 1-902-564-7317. In order to avoid the additional cost of processing fee, the refugee must submit their permanent Canadian address within the time span of 25 weeks, after initially entering Canada (CIC,2015).
