In the book The Giver, Jonas has been chosen to be the new receiver. He is learning about all the things that have happened in the past and what is happening now. Although some readers may not recognize the underlying Biblical connections in The Giver, through this utopian society, Lois Lowry communicates that the world was meant to be imperfect for a reason. Lowry uses Jonas's father to communicate that the world is not perfect. She says, "'you know,' his father finally said, 'every December was exciting to me when I was young. And it has been for you and Lily, too, I'm sure. Each December brings such changes.'" This sene took place after dinner and the sharing of feelings. Jonas had told them his dream of the stirrings and his parents thought about it and decided to talk to him after Lily left the room. This means that they only celebration they ever have is in December and every year as they get older things change, but once you are a twelve, you receive your job.
