Would you rather stay with your friends at a boarding school or be with a parent in an important march for fair pay? Well, Cal in “Two Roads” by Joseph Bruchac had to go through just that. Cal was brought to Challagi boarding school by his father, as his father had to leave and go to the ‘Bonus army’ and march with them for his rightful pay serving in World War 1. While staying at Challagi, Cal learns more of his identity as being a Creek Indian, and makes friends along the way. In the end, Cal leaves Challagi in search of his father due to a vision of his father's death. When Cal and his father are safe, Cal must decide whether he wants to stay at Challagi or be with his father in another bonus army march. Even though Cal does choose to be …show more content…

Now that he thinks back at Challagi, he thinks about actually joining the track team when he comes back to Challagi. In chapter 30 on page 314 it states "I might even join Ray Chapmans track team” (Bruchac). This says how he’s considering joining the track team, which means how he’s most likely going to stay at Challagi long enough to take part in their ‘clubs’ and sports. As in the beginning of the book in chapter 20 on page 216 it states “‘Think about the track team. Okay?’....How can I explain to him that the last thing I want to do is join anyones team?” (Bruchac). When Cal thinks this, it shows how at first he didn't want to join the track team at all, but now he’s thinking about joining it. Overall, it shows how he’s willing to stay at Challagi and join an activity that would bond him closer to the school. Even though he could join another track team or different activity all together outside of the school, he wouldn’t have the same connection with those teammates and/or the person in charge of the activity. He wouldn't have the connection that he has with Ray Chapman and the other Indian boys that participate in the track team. Also being in the track team at Challagi would enrich him and help him with team building skills, as he would be with people that relate to
