He was the only child, and his name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski. After his father, Apollo Korzeniowski, joined a resistance movement against the Russian Empire, his family was exiled from the Poland and sent to Russia territory, Vologda and Chernihiv (Wikipedia). Apollo wrote variety plays and criticized the reality. Although his activity was not well known, it greatly influenced Conrad’s literary works later (Gradesaver). Due to the repetitive removal from places at a young age, his education was irregular. Apollo home schooled at first, which strongly influenced his writing afterwards, and then he attended the private school. Even though he had no interest in studying, he mastered French and knew some Latin, Greek, and German. He was also a member of Intelligentsia, which was a social group of educated people that played important role to develop society. He started his sailing as a mariner at an age 16, and also became a merchant due his uncle’s friend’s introduction. He spent 19 years seafaring. He did international gun smuggling and gained debt. He even tried suicide and failed (Wikipedia). He visited different places, including the Belgian Congo and Australia during the seafaring years. These experiences are portrayed in his literary works afterwards. In 1894, he quitted a seafaring job and became a professional writer (Yale Modernism Lab). In 1896, he married with Jessie George who is 16 years younger than Conrad, and they had two son, Borys and John. Jessie George well supported Conrad to write numerous stories.

Leo Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Ilych” and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” are similar in many ways, but different in others too. There is illness and death in both, and the time to choose life or death arises in both plots. One character chooses to live and the other has no choice, but drives himself mad before he meets Death. The human existence is approached differently in the two texts, the main character of the separate texts differ on how they each live their lives. One is adventurous and the other is a “stick to the plan” kind of man and lives the way he thinks society wants him to live.

Since Buck, Conrad’s brother, is dead, Conrad is feeling depressed seeing that the house is more empty now that Buck is gone. Conrad also shows deep depression in school when his teacher questions him asking, “Why are you writing all this about violence and war? Aren’t there other things you’d like to say, Conrad? This doesn’t sound like you.” (Guest 19).
First, Conrad lost his brother to a boating accident and then Conrad felt as if he needed to replace his brother’s role in life. “The justice, obviously, is for the not-so-perfect kid to become that other, perfect kid. Joseph Conrad English novelist and short story writer of Polish descent. He worked as a sailor on French and British ships. Conrad spent most of his life sailing all over the world, it was this experience that provided him with material on exotic location of many of his novels. He visited Australia, various islands in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, South America, and he even sailed up the Congo River in Africa. He became naturalized British subject in 1886 then in 1894 at the age of 36 Conrad finally left the sea behind him and settled down in England and then Conrad’s literary career began in 1895 with publication of his first novel Almery’s Folly later he wrote two of his most famous novels Lord Jim (1900) and Heart of Darkness (1902).
Everyone has their own opinions of which cultures are civilized and which are savage. A culture which is civilized is one where morals are set in place and and there is intellectual advancement. Civilized cultures follow a set a moral given to them usually by a government. A savage culture is where there are no morals in place. The people part of this culture do not follow any morals only hoping to survive, with no government intact.
Psychotic Darkness A gun gives you the opportunity, but a thought pulls the trigger. In this world, there are many life changing situations that can test one's sanity. Such situations can capture one's mind leading the mind to be on the verge of psychotic.
