Joseph Conrad sure does describes the area as very dark and black with infinite chances of anything that someone could do. Chinua Achebe points out the use of monsters in Conrad's story and it refers to African American people and says it was very inhuman of him to say that in his story. Many authors and critics say when Joseph Conrad was alive he needed to judge his writing's twice by himself and another professional writer to make him write clearly and adequately.
