Joseph Stalin was born in 1878 in Gorgi, Georgia according to Biography.com Editors. His birth name was given to him as Losif Jughashvili. Joseph was born an only child into a family who lived in poverty. Stalin’s dad according to History.com Staff, was a shoemaker who had a problem with alcoholism who often beat Stalin as a young boy, while his mother was a laundress. As a child Stalin contracted smallpox, leaving scars on his face. As a teenager Stalin earned a scholarship to attend a seminary in the city of Tblisi to study priesthood. Stalin served for the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party, and in 1917 the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia (History.com Staff). Lenin was the first leader of the Bolshevik party, but Stalin continued to rise in power within the Bolshevik Party. In 1922 Stalin became secretary of general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Lenin later died in 1924, and Stalin found his way to the top in the Bolshevik Party. In the late 1920’s, Joseph then became the dictator of the USSR. Stalin’s five year plan soon came into effect once he gained control of the USSR. The five year plan according to Biography, was that Stalin believed the country should move away from agriculture, and become a more industrialized country. The five year plan put this idea into effect by building factories all over the country (Biography). Not only did Stalin build factories, but he also built and created numerous gulag camps all over Russia where prisoners were sent to work as slaves. When Stalin was in power, he ruled the country of Russia with terror. According to History.com Staff, Stalin encouraged the use of spies and secret police. As a citizen of Russia, if one did not follow Stalin’s rule they were sent to the gulag camps to evidently work themselves to death.
