Stalin’s leadership was decisive to a moderate extent within the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War. Joseph Stalin was a Soviet revolutionary and a dictator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1929 to 1953. The Great Patriotic War was fought during 1941 to 1945 along the many fronts of the Eastern Front of World War II between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Stalin served an important role within the Great Patriotic War that led the Soviets to victory against the Germans. However, Stalin’s role as a wartime leader presented flaws and other key figures, such as Zhukov, contributed to Soviet’s victory against the Germans. Stalin’s ruthlessness pressed on the Red Army, such as harsh disciplines, role of the NKVD, Orders 227 and 270, strengthened the troops’ loyalty and motivation to fight for their country. Though Stalin’s role as a wartime leader within the Great Patriotic War was evident, the role of his generals, Vasilevsky, Antonov and Zhuvok, were vital to gain military advantage and victory against Nazi Germany.
