During slavery, it was rare to find a black man who succeeded towards learning and being a risk-taker. To begin with, part of the title is a strong word. Ingrate is a person who is not grateful; not appreciative. The story focus on three main people, but only one stood out. Joshua Leckler, a hardworking man, who doesn’t give up on landing his freedom. The story is during slavery, so surely there will be some type of conflict. However, Josh has a plan, a plan that comes with struggle and risk. He had no time to marry or look for love, but rather think about his freedom ("The Integrate", para. 14). There’s a battle to go through due to him being a slave. It came upon on him that there will be fear, difficulties, and a hard crossover to get to his journey ("The Integrate", para. 15). But, one day while Josh was at work a voice gave him courage to follow ("The Integrate", para. 15). Josh successfully ran away without any approval from anyone. Mr. Leckler, is worried about Josh because Josh is nowhere in sight ("The Integrate", para. 16). That evening, Mr. Leckler took the train where he then finds out about that his slave left the night before ("The Integrate", para. 17). Mr. Leckler wondered and become angry but there’s nothing he can do about it (“The Integrate", para. 17). Leckler had high hopes for Josh, but that soon changed after Josh disappearance. Arriving to the station agent, Mr. Leckler to ask have Josh been seen ("The Integrate"). Making things worse, it is discovered that Josh has been taught to read and write also he forged his master’s name ("The Integrate"). Later while at home, Mr. Lecker becomes calm and thinks that Josh is working for someone else ("The Integrate", para. 18). Mr. Lecker then discuss to his wife about how he treated Josh and how Josh didn’t give him any warnings ("The Integrate", para. 19). With Josh learning how to read and write during this time, is a tool of power as stated. It’s not surprising that he use his knowledge to escape which worked well for him since he had to sign to leave. Josh begins his new life in Canada as of being a free man ("The Integrate", para. 21). Things changed for Josh for the better. His manhood was recognized by the whites who came into contact with him ("The Integrate", para. 22). He met people like him who had escaped from their land and he heard about names that are famous today ("The Integrate", para. 22). Years passed, and one day stormy weather approached, freedom was heard by a voice ("The Integrate", para. 23). Josh luckily became an orderly sergeant due to his intelligence ("The Integrate", para. 24).
