The book Dunkirk was written Joshua Levine to try to cast a preview into the lives of the soldiers stranded at the port of Dunkirk during the Battle of Dunkirk in May/June 1940. Joshua Levine’s point in writing Dunkirk was to prove the difficulty and suffering that occurred during this battle and to shine a light on the real day-to-day lives of all these soldiers. The type of history in this book is over the group of soldiers trapped in the Dunkirk port but all surrounded by the main character a Royal Air Force pilot Farrier named Tom Hardy. The story is meant to be written as from the era with added explanations from the film. The author’s purpose is to bring out the history behind the film/story of Dunkirk. The intention was also for those interested in the actual history and descriptive, and most accurate accounts of the actual battle. This included descriptions of the surrounding, events, and the distress/anger of the soldiers. An example of these types of description come from Dunkirk in which the main character described his views on what he thought was Germany’s plan, 1“And though it would never be publicly admitted, they must also be brainwashed to adopt his ideology. Pure by blood, stripped of free will, they were going to make Germany great again.” The type of evidence and resources used in this book is collected from different accounts of soldiers in The Battle of Dunkirk, added realistic fiction, and real-life events. When he is seen by the soldiers, the soldiers begin questioning him about the whereabouts of the air force and why they are not helping the stranded soldiers by sending medical aid, supplies, but firstly a rescue. During his time on this port many pass away by the constant bombing, shooting, and attacks by the Nazi’s who fly over them. Many scenes are described of soldiers passing away, barely making it, or being seriously injured. Descriptions of starvation and injured soldiers are also throughout the book. There is also dialogue of the soldiers and their thoughts about the war and the Nazis, many speaking about Hitler. A scene that is especially remembered is the portrayal of the Nazi’s dropping propaganda onto the soldiers. The Nazi’s through down papers onto the port showing that they are surrounded by Nazi troops and that they should surrender. The Nazi’s also promised safety upon there surrender but the soldiers knew about the harsh executions that the Nazi’s made and knew not to trust them. Many other scenes based on real-life crucial events in the Battle of Dunkirk were described.
