This journal article by Cécile Whiting explores Andy Warhol’s artworks within the framework of public and private-­‐self portrayal. Whiting provides facts on Marilyn Monroe’s life and scrutinises the circumstances of her death. In addition Whiting provides examples of how Monroe has been portrayed in the media, art and photography prior to Warhol’s Marilyn 1964 print. Whiting argues “... a portrait may have nothing to do with the sitter’s personality...”(p.58), contending that Warhol’s prints portray Monroe as her celebrity façade not her private self.
