Journal entry #1 The book The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a very captivating, outgoing book. With the setting being in New York City and Boston in the 1950’s, the story of Esther Greenwood’s experience is brought to life. Esther, the main character, is a current college student who goes to New York to work on a magazine for a month, as a guest editor for a woman named Jay Cee. She and eleven other college girls are staying at an all-girl hotel where the sponsors pay for all of their expenses. Though she knows this is a once in a lifetime experience, and that she should be having the best time of her life on this extraordinary trip, she feels sickened by the execution of the Rosenbergs. However, she still attempts to lose her virginity to the UN interpreter guy. Yet she is rejected and feels even worse than before. Following this let down, she also has an uncompromising talk with Jay Cee, making her question her abilities. She also now worries about what she will do after college and no longer wants to marry her boyfriend Buddy Willard, her ideal mate, for he doesn’t understand her love for poetry. …show more content…

Now she is spending the entire summer with her mom at home. Reality has now hit her and it has hit her hard. She is no longer able to read, write, or sleep. And the worst thing is that she even stops bathing. Not long after her mom starts seeing this behavior from her, she decides to take her to see a psychiatrist in hope to help her recover. However she becomes more unstable than ever and tries to kill herself after being prescribed an electric shock therapy from her psychiatrist. She tries multiple different ways to kill herself, but the closest she gets is when she takes a hefty amount of sleeping
