Journal Response 1: Story – Lydia Davis The short narrative titled Story is written in an interesting manner in which the author incorporates herself into the plot as the stories protagonist. The character although unlikable due to her paranoid behavioral patterns, is very relatable. It is apparent that the narrative discuss uncertainty that people may have in everyday life and or in relationships. In life one faces a plethora of disappointments, trials and tribulations, leaving the human mind to question why. When one is uncertain the mind conjures up a variety of stories or hypnosis, depicted through the characters actions of going to her boyfriend’s house a second time with multiple possible scenarios in her head. Although he has not personally intertied with the people of the tribe, he utilizes research to write his poems. The poems utilizes a lot of repetition, Onomatopoeia, drums and chanting in his poems to describe the experiences of the native people. At first I had difficulty comprehending the various sounds and noises in his performance, although after I viewed the book it made more sense. A lot of the pages of the book had various illegible letters scattered throughout the lines, mainly focusing on the astatic quality of the work. After being able to comprehend the various sounds that piece was comprised of the reiterations made more sense. Although as the performance continued my mind became more aware of the echoing words thus making them seem more pronounced. Closer to the end of the presentation the words and sounds felt muddled together, making my mind question as to when it would end, the noise creating a sense of tension within myself. Lydia Kwa provided a backstory and explanation for her work thus making the context of the reading easier for me to understand. Her work possessed an interesting narrative quality, as the poetry tells stories of people’s lives. What stood out to me the most was when she discussed her work as a psychologist, and how she dealt with struggles in her own life and how her experiences make her empathetic to the problems …show more content…

Sarah Leavitt’s graphic novel titled Tangles has an autobiographical approach to it, articulating the authors relationship with her mother and the difficulties accompanied with her mother’s Alzheimer’s. The novel discusses the author’s personal experiences and at the same time she made the story relatable. Even though the reader did not know Leavitt’s mother she feels like an important person from the way she is portrayed in the work. I also enjoyed how the author did not always portray herself in the best light, she openly depicted her mistakes. There were many sections where the author said she had to grow up and at the same time she acted like a child when regarding her mother’s condition.
