The Joy Luck Club movie was not an exact copy of the novel by Amy Tan. The visual effects of the movie did a great job at highlighting some aspects of the storylines. The mother-daughter relationship was presented beautifully. The movie gave a greater visual effect then the novel. I developed an appreciation of who each of the characters were. However, the novel presented greater details of each of the character’s storylines. Reading the novel, it was difficult to keep track of each of the mother-daughter duo. The movie gave me a better visual effect of each character and keeping track of each mother- daughter duo which became easier to follow because of facial recognition. it had multiple themes one particular I am very intrigued by was the mother -daughter relationship. The novel brought focus to each life of the characters. Whereas in the movie, the stories were told in no particular order. The movie theme was base around the first prologue in the novel “Feathers from a Thousand Li Awau” the swan feather. The movie begins with a party, and all characters are together in one place. We begin to learn about each of the characters throughout this party. There are some flashbacks in the lives of the characters as the party goes on. The movie started with the Suyuan Woo story line. She was the first member of The Joy Luck Club to ever die. Her daughter, Jing-Mei, takes her mother's place at the table with her mother’s friends to play Mah-jong and learns of the secret that her mother had twin girls, her half-sisters, when she lived in China. Suyuan became ill and could no longer carry her babies. She was forced to leave them by the side of the road under a tree. The twin girls are still alive and Jing-Mei must go to China to meet
