People have different perspectives on what makes a good or bad parent. Some people think that being a good parent means someone who truly cares for their child while others think that a good parent is someone who fills the needs of their child. The "Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan documents the narratives of four pairs of Chinese American mothers and daughters. The parents in this novel are good parents for a number of reasons. One reason why the parents in this novel are good is because they try to build respnsibility in their child. When their family goes to the beach, the daughter's mom makes sure the daughter takes care and watches out for her brother. She reminds the daughter to "Dansying tamende shenti which means take care of them". When she complains and reasons why she should do so, the mother says, "Yiding" which means she "must because they are her brother". This quotation shows good parenting because it shows that the daughter is at fault, not the mother. The mother is making her take care of her brothers to build more responsibility in her, but her daughter doesn't understand that.
