In The House of Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne builds a house structured around the seven Pyncheon family members who act as gables, adding to the house’s appearance and character. Throughout the different generations of the family, the house reflects its current occupiers while also keeping the personalities of the past possessors alive. While the house gets passed down, each occupant leaves a mark on the house allowing them to live on in the house forever. Others perceive Colonel Pyncheon and the Pyncheon Mansion with similar esteem. Colonel Pyncheon is revered in government and the Quaker communities. Judge Pyncheon embodies most of the character traits of the Colonel, but the Judge possesses character traits that darker and greedier. When Judge Jaffrey found his Uncle dead of natural causes, he frames Clifford, who resided with the Uncle at the time, for murder. With Clifford locked away, the inheritance would be given to him, but he does not get the mansion. With his newly gained wealth, he builds up a career as a Judge, but his secret looms in the background. The Mansion reflects the Judge’s secretive character traits. The house hides deeds of Pyncheon land in Maine, as well as Matthew Maule’s structural secrets that he added out of spite. Years after Hepzibah Pyncheon was given the mansion from her uncle, the house’s appearance grows to look more like her. Hepzibah looks like a homely, grumpy old woman. Most people are scared of her, and they try to avoid her. Even though she does not show it, she possesses a warm heart and soul. A character of an ugly outside with a warm inside is projected onto the House of Seven Gables.
