Back in the 14th and 15th centuries, people were religious and believed in the supernatural stories like the world ending someday. The Horsemen are known to be Greek myths, meaning that they are only in stories, however, some believe that they will come on Judgement Day to ruin the earth. Judgment Day is also known as the Second Coming of Christ, which is when Christ will return from heaven and destroy earth. Dickens establishes that the Four Horsemen, Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death, are the road that led the peasants to their plan of burning the chateau. The hatred and revenge in the novel started a revolution that is destined to occur, and destiny cannot be stopped. The first two Horsemen are Famine and Pestilence, who seem to work together to affect the people of France. The Four Horsemen being present was bad enough, but when “the sun became black” and “the moon became as blood”, that was what brought the realization of a bad spirit coming (Rev. 6:12). After the works of the Horsemen, the real horror was going to be on earth and that is resembled with the guillotine during the time because of how many people were killed by it. Since the two main life sources, the sun and moon, were corrupted, it is clear that the end is near and was done by the Horsemen to help Christ. The final step to the whole journey of the peasants was for everyone to know that “the chateau is on fire” and when the nobles sought help, replies was that the chateau “must burn” (Dickens 178).
