The document "On the Equality of the Sexes" by Judith Sargent Murray reveals the author's arguments on gender inequality in America. Published in 1790 in the Massachusetts Magazine, Murray's thoughts on the matter of women's education stems from her own experience on denied opportunities because of her gender. She was not allowed to attend college for the simple fact that she was a female, but had studied alongside her brother while he was preparing for college. This shows that despite her sex, she was just as capable as a male in terms of intellectual capacity and it was unfair that she was not allowed to further this pursuit.

Recent findings have acknowledged that women only represent approximately 34% of the entire STEM worker population. This low statistic is due to the presence of gender stereotypes in modern society, which have deprived the opportunities available to women for centuries. Women are often underrepresented in various STEM disciplines, including engineering, mathematics, and computer science. In spite of this historical setback, Edith Clarke, the first female electrical engineer, successfully paved the way for future generations of women in STEM through her many accomplishments. Born in February of 1883 in Ellicott City, Maryland, Edith was one of nine children.
Much of this difference is the result of traditional sexism in certain fields, including construction, restaurant kitchens, the military and first responders, such as police and firemen. This has also been the case in STEM fields, where women have had a difficult time gaining equality. Women have not had female role models in the science fields and have not always seen a path forward to success in these areas. Even though women make up some 50% of the workforce, they only account for roughly 24% of STEM jobs, according to a US Department of Commerce study. The report cites as reasons for this discrepancy a lack of female role models, gender stereotyping, and less family-friendly flexibility than in other areas.
Annotated Bibliography Gender equality in the workforce is a subject that has been researched throughout the years. Following the Civil Rights Movement in 1964 when sexual discrimination was outlawed, and in 1967 when President Johnson amended the bill in 1967. Throughout the history of the United States, let alone the world, women have faced a lack of economic independence that caused them to become dependent on their fathers or husbands. A study by Gaucher found that job advertisements for male-dominated careers tended to use more argentic words (or words denoting agency, such as "leader" and "goal-oriented") associated with male stereotypes. The stereotype threat is one of the important reasons domestic females are underrepresented in STEM field. Because stereotype threats bring females extra stresses, they could lead to negative academic performances for females, especially for those studying mathematics and science. These problems are of several types, some of which are at the phase before getting the job, in which a male applicant would have a higher possibility of getting the job rather than a female applicant.
